WHO WE ARE
CCRD is a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of women of all ages. A full contact, rock 'n' roll fueled, all-girl, flat track roller derby, LIVE here for the first time on California's Central Coast! CCRD was founded in January 2006, by two local women - Heather Coss (Rotten Peaches), and Carey Jones (Senorita Cheeba) who were looking for something fun to be involved in. CCRD is a great way to blow off steam, meet like-minded women on the Central Coast, and burn over 500 calories an hour! CCRD was born BY local women FOR local women.
Since CCRD's conception, the league has thrown two home bouts at the Paso Robles Event Center, and Skate-Mor skating rink to sold-out crowds. Roller Bowl '06 in November of 2006 was such a success that the women of CCRD were able to donate $5,000 to the North County Women's Shelter. In July 2007, the skaters of CCRD hosted a free bout for all to come out and enjoy and in the process collected over 200 needed items for the de Groot Children's Nursing Home of San Luis Obispo. These are just a couple examples of the local charities CCRD has helped out in the past and the women of CCRD are always looking for more ways to help out their community. CCRD enjoys donating both time and money to local charities in need, and plan to do so every year.
THE SPORT
Roller derby was created in 1935 by Leo Seltzer, a Chicago promoter
looking to drum up business for the Chicago Coliseum. Roller derby
is one of only two sports to be created from scratch by an American
(the other is basketball). At its zenith in the early 1970s, roller
derby played to sold-out crowds at stadiums and arenas across the
U.S. including the Oakland Coliseum, White Sox Park and Madison Square
Garden.
After two decades in relative obscurity, the sport has experienced
a grassroots revival, mostly among women who grew up in the 80's on
quad skates. As of February 2006 there were more than 80 leagues formed
or forming around the country. These contemporary leagues are thus
far all-female and self-organized, formed in an indie spirit by relatively
new roller derby enthusiasts.
